NSF
and Political Science
Less than one month before an
annual mid-August application deadline, the funding agency has scrapped new
political-science funding for the rest of 2013. The NSF declines to explain its
reasons for eliminating the grant call, one of two that typically take place
each year. But leaders in the field are blaming Congress, which on 21 March
passed a bill requiring that NSF-funded political-science research benefit
either national security or economic interests.
From: http://www.nature.com/news/nsf-cancels-political-science-grant-cycle-1.13501
Please let me know If you
were planning on submitting a political science grant in August. It’s
important that the impact of this policy be understood. Furthermore,
while political science is impacted this year, other field may be next. There
are reports that some members of Congress are opposed to research on
anti-gravity.
Big Data, Big Network Workshop
I’ve recently been added to
the board of the Corporation
for
Education
Network Initiatives in California, which designs, implements, and operates
CalREN, the California Research and Education Network, a high-bandwidth,
high-capacity Internet network used by UC. The workshop below may
be of interest to UCR faculty interested in collaborations with Mexico.
(Discussion are underway with UC-MEXUS as well).
CALL
FOR ABSTRACTS: AmLight, Calit2, CENIC, CICESE, and CUDI have invited you to
submit an abstract at the
Big Data, Big Network
Workshop!
WHERE: |
WHEN: |
Currently,
a 10 Gigabit per second network link has been established between
advanced research and education networks in the United States and in Mexico.
Broadly, this wide-bandwidth network link aims to enhance science and
engineering research and education activities between the U.S. and Mexico.
In
order to promote the use of this network link to stimulate cross-border
collaboration in data-intensive sciences, the Big Data,
Big Network workshop is being held at the Centro
de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (Ensenada Center
for Scientific Research and Higher Education, CICESE, www.cicese.edu.mx) on October 10-11,
2013.
The
Big Data, Big Network Conference Committee is seeking
abstracts for panel discussions on data-intensive applications
and research that could potentially benefit from this 10
Gigabit connection. Examples of focus areas of interest include but are not
limited to the following:
Sessions
will be introduced by brief presentations describing cross-border
collaborative efforts which could potentially benefit from the 10 Gigabit link.
At the conclusion of these short presentations, a panel of experts will discuss
current collaborative research and ways in which it can utilize the
connectivity, with input and questions from an audience.
Once again, the conference committee's interest is
not limited to the above research areas! Abstracts that focus on other
research areas and collaborative possibilities are welcome!
Priority
will be given to abstracts which consists of active and potential US-Mexican
collaborations.
Abstracts need not be focused on current uses of
the cross-border 10 Gigabit network connection! The purpose of
this workshop is to enhance cross-border collaborations through the use of the
network link. As a result, we are especially interested in current research
collaborations that are not necessarily using the link but which could benefit
from its use.
How
to Submit an Abstract
Abstracts
may be submitted via e-mail to abstracts-bdbg-workshop@amlight.net, in either MS
Word, PDF, or plain text format. Abstracts should be no longer than one page
and should include the following information:
The
deadline for abstracts is August 30, 2013.
Former UCR Chancellor
Nominated to Head NSF
President Obama has nominated
former UCR Chancellor France Cordova to head the National Science
Foundation. The White House announced Cordova’s nomination Wednesday,
July 31. An astrophysicist, Cordova headed UCR from 2002-2007. She is
president emerita of Purdue University, where she served as president from 2007
to 2012.
Elements of Sustainable
Companies
If you are thinking of forming a
company to commercialize your technology, this advice from Sequoia Capital may
be useful (from http://www.sequoiacap.com/us/ideas).
Start-ups with these
characteristics have the best chance of becoming enduring companies.
·
Clarity of Purpose: Summarize the company’s business on the back
of a business card.
·
Large Markets: Address existing markets poised for rapid growth or
change. A market on the path to a $1B potential allows for error and time for
real margins to develop.
·
Pain Killers: Pick the one thing that is of burning
importance to the customer then delight them with a compelling solution.
·
Think Differently: Constantly challenge conventional wisdom. Take
the contrarian route. Create novel solutions. Outwit the competition.
·
Team DNA: A company’s DNA is set in the first 90 days. All team
members are the smartest or most clever in their domain. “A” level founders
attract an “A” level team.
·
Frugality: Focus spending on what’s critical. Spend only on
the priorities and maximize profitability.
