NIH Small Business
Innovation Research (SBIR) Workshop, 11/16/15 at 1:30pm
UCR will host a workshop on how to get funding through the NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program on Monday, November 16 from 1:30pm-3:30pm in the Alumni & Visitors Center. It will feature a talk by Kurt Marek, PhD, Deputy Director of the Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination (OTAC) at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Additionally, Kurt has offered to meet with interested researchers in one-on-one meetings following his talk. If you are interested in speaking with Kurt, or if you just wish to attend the workshop, please register here: http://goo.gl/forms/DG1BQ7cv7H. Parking will be provided in Lot 24.
To encourage participation grant programs like this, UCR waives overhead on SBIR and STTR Phase I grants (when permitted by the agency). See http://research.ucr.edu/About/News.aspx?K=323.
Kurt Marek, PhD, is the
Deputy Director of the Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination
(OTAC) at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). OTAC is
charged with developing trans-NHLBI programs to foster the translation of early
stage discoveries into commercial products. The Office coordinates the NIH
Centers of Accelerated Innovations and the Institute’s small business program.
Dr. Marek is the Program Director for the NIH Research and Commercialization
Hubs program and oversees the Institute’s efforts to support small businesses
performing research and development on innovative biomedical products and to
facilitate partnerships between small businesses, investors and strategic
partners. Dr. Marek has received numerous awards over the course of his government
service, and has served as an organizer of and speaker at national conferences.
Dr. Marek began working at the NHLBI in 2010 as an AAAS Science and Technology
Policy Fellow.
Prior to beginning his fellowship at the NIH, Dr. Marek was a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellow at the University of California, San Diego where he studied the development of the spinal cord, using genomics to identify new roles for electrical activity in the nervous system and characterizing the underlying molecular mechanisms. Dr. Marek received his PhD in Neuroscience from the University of California, San Francisco where he was a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow. He has a BS in Biology and a BA in Humanities from the University of California, San Diego.
Faculty, Postdocs, Students, and outside collaborators are welcome to attend.
NIH has announced Changes to Policies, Instructions and
Forms for 2016 Grant Applications. The
planned changes focus on the following areas:

Statistical
Consulting Collaboratory Survey
A survey is currently being conducted to identify how the Statistical Consulting Collaboratory has worked with its clients, and what the overall satisfaction level of the client experience has been. If you are a past client of the Collaboratory, I encourage you to take 2-3 minutes to answer a few questions concerning your experiences. Take the Survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LKY6VYM

in Huntingbeach, but then I heard that two hooded mergansers were spotted at
AgOps on campus. Here’s both
