General Instructions for Accessing the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program


If you have never registered as a CITI user, please follow the instructions below to take the required training.

 

All Users

Go to the CITI home page at www.citiprogram.org. New users should follow the steps listed in Section 1 below and returning users should follow the steps listed in Section 2 or 3 below.

Section 1: New Users (with UCR email account)

If you have never taken the CITI program, please click on the “Register” link to create an account and complete steps 1-7.

In Step 1, choose University of California at Riverside as your institution.

For Steps 2-6, continue with the registration process filling in all of the appropriate personal information requested.

Step 7 will be the “CITI Course Enrollment Procedures.” Please read the instructions and continue to scroll down to the “CITI Course Enrollment Questions.”  For questions 1 & 3, the answers should be provided as follows*:

  • Question 1: Please provide a selection only if you are completing CITI training to satisfy NSF and/or NIFA requirements for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training. Select the track that most closely aligns with your research.
    • i.e., Biomedical RCR, Social and Behavioral RCR, Physical Science RCR, Humanities RCR, & RCR for Engineers.
    • Only one selection can be made during the registration process, but additional courses can be added at later time (see Section 3 below).

  • Question 3: Please provide a selection only if you are completing CITI training to satisfy the Human Subjects Research training requirement for IRB.  Select the track that most closely aligns with your research. 
    • i.e., Biomedical Research Investigators, Social & Behavioral Research Investigators, or Research with data or laboratory specimens.
    • Only one selection can be made during the registration process, but additional courses can be added at later time (see Section 3 below).

*The remaining questions can be skipped– answer if you wish to complete additional training

Once you have made the appropriate selections – either RCR or Human Subjects research, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Complete Registration.” Click on “Finalize registration.” This will bring you to the main page where you can begin the correct set of courses. You can log out and re-enter the course as many times as you wish.


Certification from a comparable program

UCR accepts CITI certification if it has been completed within the past three years. Please submit a copy of your completed training certification to IRB@ucr.edu. However, you may be required to re-take the above modules in CITI if the previous training did not include human subjects training and/or is older than 3 years.

Section 2: Returning CITI Users (with a CITI account from another institution)

  • Log in using your username and password from your previous institution
  • In the Main Menu, click on the link “Affiliate with another institution
  • Choose University of California at Riverside as your institution.
  • Fill in the required personal information on the next page and click “Next” to
    advance to the curriculum selection
  • Please refer to instructions listed above in Section 1, Step 7 for the selection of curriculum
  • You can log out and re-enter the course as many times as you wish

 

Section 3: Adding Additional Courses (existing UCR Users)

  • Log in using your username and password
  • Under My Learner Tools, click on the link “Add a Course.”
  • You will be directed to the “CITI Course Enrollment Procedure” page and the “CITI Course Enrollment Questions”
  • Please refer to instructions listed above in Section 1, Step 7 for the selection of curriculum
  • You can log out and re-enter the course as many times as you wish
